How to Get More Followers on a Facebook Page
What actually reaches people on Facebook now, why page organic reach fell, and the changes that recover it without spending anything on ads.
Facebook pages have a specific reputation: organic reach collapsed and everything is pay-to-play. That is half true, and the half that is false is where the free growth is.
Reach for text and link posts did collapse. Reach for video, and particularly for short video, did not — and a page posting the right format still grows without a budget.
Why page reach fell, plainly
It is not punishment and it is not a conspiracy. Three structural changes stacked up over a decade.
- Supply outgrew attention. Far more pages posting than there is feed to show it in, so the share each page gets fell.
- The feed shifted toward people and groups, which are what most users say they want from Facebook.
- Then it shifted toward recommended video, which is where the attention actually goes now.
- Link posts were deprioritised because they send people away, and time on platform is what the ranking optimises.
That last point is the one to act on: a link in the first comment rather than the post body reliably reaches more people than a link post does.
What still reaches people organically
| Format | Organic reach | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Reels / short video | Highest by a wide margin | Reaching people who do not follow the page |
| Native video | High | Depth for an audience that already knows you |
| Photo posts | Moderate | Community and recognition |
| Text posts | Low but not zero | Questions and prompts, which invite comments |
| Link posts | Lowest | Use only when the link is the point; put it in the comment |
The gap between the top and bottom rows on Facebook is larger than the equivalent gap on any other platform. Format choice does more here than anywhere else.
The comment-first structure
Facebook's ranking gives disproportionate weight to conversation, and pages that treat comments as the product rather than the aftermath grow faster.
- Ask one specific answerable question per post. Broad questions get no answers; narrow ones get many.
- Reply to every comment from the page, not from a personal profile. Page replies keep the thread attached.
- Reply as a comment, not a like. A like ends the thread; a reply extends it.
- Comments in the first hour matter most, so post when you are able to sit with it for thirty minutes.
- Do not delete critical comments unless they break rules — the thread is the reach.
Groups: the part most pages ignore
Group distribution is separate from page distribution and it did not decline the way page reach did.
- Join groups where your audience already discusses the subject and participate as a person, not as a page.
- Answer questions properly, with the answer in the comment rather than a link out. Links in most groups are filtered or removed.
- When a page is genuinely relevant, mention it once and let people find it.
- Once the page has an audience, a linked group of its own converts followers into a community — but only after there is something to build it around.
- Never buy group access or mass-join. Both get accounts restricted.
This is slower than it sounds and it works. Groups are where Facebook's remaining organic attention actually lives.
A 90-day page plan with no budget
| Weeks | Do | Watch |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Fix the page: one clear description, a pinned post, no dead links | Page visits per post |
| 3–6 | Three short videos a week, one question post | Reach per post by format |
| 7–9 | Double the format with the highest reach; drop the lowest | Follows per page visit |
| 10–12 | Add one group habit: answer three questions a week | Comments per post |
The measurement matters more than the tasks. If reach by format is not separated, a page will conclude that Facebook does not work when what is not working is one format.
What free page-like services do
Covered fully in the free Facebook followers guide, but in short, and because pages are targeted more aggressively than personal accounts.
- The likes come from accounts that never see the page again, so the page's engagement share falls.
- Page insights become unreadable, which removes the only way to learn which format works.
- Business verification and any future advertising review look at authenticity.
- Page role compromise is the more serious version: a service given admin access can be very hard to remove.
Check page roles in your settings today. Old agencies, former employees and forgotten apps accumulate there, and a stale admin is a real risk.

Questions about this guide
Is organic reach on Facebook really dead?
For text and link posts it is very low; for short video it is not, and short video is now the main way non-followers see a page. Pages reporting that Facebook does not work are almost always measuring across all formats at once. Separate reach by format for a month and the picture usually changes completely.
How do I get more Facebook page followers for free?
Post short video regularly, ask one specific answerable question per post, and reply to every comment from the page within the first hour. Add a group habit — genuinely answering questions where your audience already talks — which is where much of Facebook's remaining organic attention lives. None of that costs anything and all of it compounds.
Should I put links in Facebook posts?
Put the link in the first comment and keep the post itself native. Link posts are ranked lower because they send people off the platform, and the difference in reach is large enough to matter on almost every page. If the link genuinely is the point of the post, accept the lower reach knowingly rather than by accident.
Do page likes still matter?
Less than they did, because reach is now decided mostly per post rather than by audience size. They still matter as a returning-audience signal and as social proof to a visitor. What matters more is the share of your audience that engages, which is why bought likes are actively harmful rather than merely useless.
