Three concentric rings of pill shapes from large and dim to small and bright

A good tag set is not a long list of popular words. It is a small mix across three volume bands, so a post has a chance in a busy tag and a real chance in a quiet one.

This tool builds that mix from your niche, and names the tag families that actively hurt a post. It runs in your browser and connects to nothing.

Why three volume bands

Tags behave like queues. In a very busy tag your post is visible for seconds; in a very quiet one it stays near the top for days but few people look.

Band Typical use What it gives you
BroadOne or two per postA small chance of a large audience
Mid-volumeTwo or three per postThe band most small accounts actually get discovered in
NarrowTwo or three per postLasting visibility to a small, well-matched audience

Volumes shown by this tool are estimates. It does not connect to any platform and cannot read real tag counts — no tool that runs in your browser can.

The tag families to avoid entirely

Some tags cost a post its reach. They are the ones built around reciprocal following rather than a subject.

  • Follow-for-follow and its variants in every language.
  • Like-for-like, comment-for-comment and engagement-pod tags.
  • “Free followers” and follower-generator tags.
  • Follow-train and follow-chain tags.
  • Any tag whose entire population is other accounts asking for the same thing.

These attract accounts that unfollow within days, and they are heavily filtered on every platform. A post carrying them can be suppressed regardless of its content.

How many tags to use

Fewer than most guides suggest, and more specific.

  1. Five to eight relevant tags outperform thirty generic ones on Instagram in almost every account we have looked at.
  2. On TikTok, two or three are usually enough — the caption text and on-screen words matter more than tags there.
  3. On YouTube, tags are a minor signal; the title and thumbnail carry almost all the weight.
  4. On Facebook, tags do very little. Use one or two and spend the effort elsewhere.

Keywords matter more than tags now

On every platform, the words that appear in your caption, on screen and in your spoken audio are increasingly searchable. That is a larger opportunity than tags.

  • Say the topic out loud in the first seconds of a video — it is transcribed and indexed.
  • Put the topic in on-screen text as well as in the caption.
  • Use the words your audience would actually type, not the words the industry uses.
  • Repeat the core term naturally rather than stuffing variations of it.

Questions about this guide

Do hashtags still work?

They help discovery modestly and they are no longer the main lever on any of the four platforms. Searchable text — captions, on-screen words, spoken audio — now does more work than tags on Instagram and TikTok. Use a small specific set rather than a long generic one, and put the effort you save into making the topic legible in the first seconds.

Where do the volume estimates come from?

They are relative estimates based on how broad or specific the generated term is, not readings from any platform. This tool runs entirely in your browser and connects to nothing, so it cannot see real tag counts. Treat the bands as a way to build a balanced mix, and check a few tags manually in the app if exact volume matters to you.

Should I use the same tags every time?

Keep a stable core of three or four tags that describe what the account actually is, and rotate the rest per post. A completely fixed set stops reaching anyone new; a completely random set never builds any association between your account and a subject. The core-plus-rotation pattern gets both.

Can hashtags get my post hidden?

Yes, if they belong to the banned or heavily filtered families — reciprocal-follow tags, engagement-exchange tags and spam-adjacent tags are all filtered on the major platforms. A single such tag can suppress an otherwise fine post. The generator lists these separately so you can see the pattern rather than memorising a list that changes.
