A twelve item checklist with a few boxes ticked beside a vertical risk gauge

This is a self-audit, not an account scan. It asks twelve questions about things you can see yourself, weighs them, and returns a risk level with an ordered plan.

It is built this way on purpose. Every tool that offers to "scan your followers" needs access to your account, and access is the thing you should be protecting.

Why a checklist and not a scan

An audit tool that reads your follower list needs either your password or an app permission. Both are exactly what a compromised account starts with.

  • Password-based scanners are indistinguishable from account theft, because they are the same action.
  • Permission-based ones keep access after you have forgotten they exist, and that access can be sold with the company.
  • The signals that matter are visible to you without any access at all — which is what the twelve questions cover.

If you have already granted access to a follower-audit app you cannot name, revoking it is step one of the plan regardless of your score.

What the questions weigh

The twelve are not equal. A few are strong enough on their own to change the answer.

Signal Weight Why
Followers were bought or came from a free-follower siteHighDirect evidence rather than inference
Reach fell sharply after a follower jumpHighThe characteristic ratio damage
A password was entered on a third-party growth siteMedium-highA security event, not a growth one

The cleanup order, and why order matters

Security first, cleanup second. Cleaning an account someone else can still access wastes the work.

  1. Change the password from a device you trust.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication.
  3. Revoke every connected app you do not recognise.
  4. Check login activity and the email address on file — takeovers change the email first.
  5. Only now, start removing obvious empty followers — a few dozen a day, not thousands at once.
  6. Give reach four to eight weeks to settle, longer if the count was heavily inflated.

Mass removal in a single session looks like automated behaviour to the platform. Slow removal is not superstition; it is the difference between a cleanup and a flag.

What recovery actually looks like

Not a straight line, and not fast. Knowing the shape prevents the second mistake of giving up in week three.

  • Weeks 1–2: little visible change. Removals are processed and the ratio starts moving.
  • Weeks 3–4: engagement rate rises before reach does, because the denominator shrinks first.
  • Weeks 5–8: reach begins to follow, unevenly, with good and bad posts.
  • Months 3+: normal distribution resumes if the account keeps posting through the dip.

The most common failure here is stopping posting during the dip. Reach recovers through activity, and an account that goes quiet stays suppressed longer.

Questions about this guide

Does this tool scan my followers?

No, and it deliberately cannot. It asks twelve questions about what you have observed and scores your answers in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, no username is requested and no password or app permission is involved — which is the point, because the tools that do scan are the ones that need the access you should be protecting.

How do I know if my followers are fake without a scan?

The visible signals are reliable enough. Story views far below what the follower count suggests, comments that are emoji-only, a follower count that rose while likes stayed flat, and followers with no picture and no posts are all things you can see yourself. Any two or three of those together is stronger evidence than a percentage from a tool that guessed.

Should I remove fake followers or leave them?

Remove them, slowly. Leaving them keeps your engagement rate suppressed, which keeps reach suppressed. But mass removal in one session looks like automation to the platform and can cause its own problems — a few dozen a day over several weeks is both safer and no slower in practice, because reach takes weeks to respond either way.

Can I get my reach back after buying followers?

Usually yes, over two to three months, provided you keep posting through the dip. The engagement rate recovers first because the denominator shrinks, and distribution follows once the platform has fresh signals to work from. The accounts that do not recover are almost always the ones that went quiet while waiting.
