A three stage funnel with dots escaping through a gap in the middle stage

Views not turning into followers is the most common complaint from accounts that are technically doing well. It is also two completely different problems wearing one name, and they need opposite fixes.

This calculator splits the funnel into its two steps and names which one is blocked.

The two steps, and why splitting them matters

Views become followers through profile visits, and each step fails differently.

Step Weak Normal Strong
Views → profile visitsunder 1%1–3%over 3%
Profile visits → followsunder 5%10–20%over 25%
Views → follows overallunder 0.1%0.2–0.6%over 1%

Bands are broad and vary by niche and clip length. Their purpose is to identify which step is unusual for you, not to give you a number to chase.

If step one is weak: the post does not identify you

People watch and scroll on without ever tapping your name. The content is working and the attribution is not.

  • Say who you are and what the account is for inside the video, not only in the caption.
  • Make the first frame read as a topic rather than as a moment — a legible subject, not a face mid-sentence.
  • Put a consistent visual marker across clips so a returning viewer recognises you before they read anything.
  • Stop relying on the caption. Most viewers never expand it.

If step two is weak: the profile does not answer why follow

They arrived, looked, and left. The video did its job; the profile did not.

  1. Rewrite the bio from the reader's side: who it is for, what they get, how often.
  2. Pin three posts that look like the one that brought them there. A profile full of unrelated content converts badly no matter how good each post is.
  3. Check the top row on mobile — that is all most visitors see before deciding.
  4. Remove anything that answers a question nobody asked: awards, taglines, emoji rows.

If both steps are healthy

Then your constraint is the number of views, and no amount of profile work will change that.

  • Post more often in the format that produced these numbers.
  • Do not redesign the format. It is working; frequency is the missing input.
  • Use the growth projection tool with your current conversion to see what a higher posting rate actually yields.
  • Revisit this calculation monthly rather than weekly — one unusual clip distorts a short window badly.

Every funnel has a bottleneck. When both steps look fine, the bottleneck has simply moved upstream to reach.

Questions about this guide

What is a good views to followers ratio?

Roughly one follower per 200 to 500 views is common for small accounts, but the combined figure hides more than it shows. A 0.2% overall rate can come from a strong first step and a weak second, or the reverse, and those need opposite fixes. That is why this tool reports the two steps separately.

My video got a million views and almost no followers. Why?

Almost always because the clip travelled outside your niche. A video that reaches a general audience gets watched by people with no interest in the subject, so the profile-visit rate collapses even though the view count is enormous. It is not a failure; it is simply a different kind of reach, and the followers it does bring tend to be the best-matched ones.

Where do I find profile visits?

Instagram reports profile visits per post in professional insights, TikTok shows them in the analytics for each video and in the overview, YouTube reports channel page views, and Facebook shows page visits for a post. Use the same window for all three numbers — mixing a week of views with a month of visits produces a meaningless ratio.

Should I optimise the video or the profile first?

Whichever step this calculator names. If the views-to-visits rate is weak, working on the profile changes nothing because almost nobody is arriving there. If the visits-to-follow rate is weak, making better videos sends more people to a profile that is already turning them away. The order matters more than the effort.
